A short write up for the past month. No creative writing piece
books:
Written based on Virginia's lover, Vita Sackville-West, this novel is sort of a mock biography of her life. Vita was a poet, a writer and a part of a group of folks that explored non monogamous relationships, queerness in the early 1900s. Both married, their husbands knew about their affair and for a period of time ran away to Paris together before returning back to their husbands.
Released in 1928, I was curious how the conversation for book club would explore the public's response to this story. Because the transition was magical in nature and Orlando's life was over centuries, the public response was to ignore the innately queer narrative and in fact, it was one of Virginia's best selling books until later works overcame it.
"for it would seem - her case proved it- that we write not with the finger, but with the whole person. the nerve which control the pen winds itself about every fibre of our being, threads the heart, pierces the liver, "
"the task of estimating the length of human age is beyond our capacity, for directly we say that is is ages long, we are reminded that it is briefer than the fall of a rose leaf to the ground"
Lolly Willowes by Syliva Townsend Warner -A whimsical read that will enchant you through it's easy-to turn pages. Meant to be read underneath forest canopies with a cup of tea.
